Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by watches. Those tiny de-vices that show the exact time have always seemed to me like something un-real and magical. From my earliest days I had a certain awe of those “devices,” as the elders called them. Nothing has changed there even to this day, except that, over time, I also became a big collector of watches. I enjoy them in every aspect, as well as every available moment, whether I’m wearing them, clean-ing them, fixing them, changing bracelets or batteries.
Over time, the collection of watches spontaneously increased, as did my knowledge in the field of watchmaking. I got a tool, so now I can perform some simple operations completely by myself. All this helped me realize that in everything, including watchmaking, product quality plays a huge role.
I’m primarily referring to the product’s lifespan, but also to its unchanged ap-pearance due to wear and use. The quality, design and availability of individual models have a decisive influence on the formation of the price, as well as the availability of individual models. It is no different in the world of watches.
Rolex is a Swiss luxury watch company based in Geneva, founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf. Today, Rolex SA is the largest mechanical watch company in the world with over 2000 pieces produced daily.
In 1931, Rolex introduced an automatic mechanism with self-winding watches by wrist movements. This ingenious invention at the time is today the basis of every modern automatic or self-winding automatic watch.
That technical achievement led to radical changes in watch-wearing habits and made Rolex one of the most desirable timepieces on the planet. Thanks to its quality and the handful of novelties it has brought over time (water re-sistance, durability, reliability and accuracy), it has become one of the most desirable items in the world. Due to the aforementioned features, it quickly positioned itself in the category of luxury items that were not available to ev-eryone. Often only very rich and successful people who were at the very top of their field could afford it. The best of the best. That is why it has become a trademark of the successful and one of the first indicators of achieved success in life. It remains so to this day.
Since 2010, the Rolex brand has officially become a status symbol.
