The New York Times bestseller Eat and Run is “the inspiring story of an inspired man. Scott Jurek's phenomenal success as an ultra-marathoner demonstrates that meat and other animal foods are not necessary for optimum health, strength, and endurance.”—Andrew Weil, #1 New York Times bestelling author of Spontaneous Happiness
For nearly two decades, Scott Jurek has been a dominant force — and darling — in the grueling and growing sport of ultrarunning. He held the American 24-hour record and he was one of the elite runners profiled in the runaway bestseller Born to Run. In Eat and Run, Jurek opens up about his life and career as a champion athlete with a plant-based diet and inspires runners at every level.
From his Midwestern childhood hunting, fishing, and cooking for his meat-and-potatoes family to his slow transition to ultrarunning and veganism, Scott’s story shows the power of an iron will and blows apart the stereotypes of what athletes should eat to fuel optimal performance. Full of stories of competition as well as science and practical advice — including his own recipes — Eat and Run will motivate readers and expand their food horizons.

    🚀Não dá pra largar

2 evenings and I finished the book! So easy to read, so difficult to imagine that a human body is capable of such extreme things, especially if you yourself have recently started to prepare for your first half marathon. Truly inspiring! It is so much more that just about physical training, to train your mind. Long story short, great book!

Run until you can’t run anymore. Then run some more. Find a new source of energy and will. Then run even faster.

If we read it closely, everything we need to know about running is in Pheidippides’ story. He ran over 300 miles—the first half in a little over one day—and he didn’t even get what he wanted! If you run long enough, that tends to happen. Whatever quantitative measure of success you set out to achieve becomes either unattainable or meaningless. The reward of running—of anything—lies within us. As I sought bigger rewards and more victories in my sport, it was a lesson I learned over and over again. We focus on something external to motivate us, but we need to remember that it’s the process of reaching for that prize—not the prize itself—that can bring us peace and joy. Life, as countless posters and bumper stickers rightly attest, is a journey, not a destination.

In a sprint, if you don’t have perfect form, you’re doomed. The ultra distance forgives injury, fatigue, bad form, and illness. A bear with determination will defeat a dreamy gazelle every time. I can’t count the number of times people have said, “I can’t believe he beat me.” Distance strips you bare.
