This is an account of real events that have been fictionalized. The story is set during the American Revolution and concerns chiefly members of a gang known as the Doan Gang. They were 4 brothers, all Quakers, whose strict religious beliefs led them to commit many violent acts against those whom they feared were interfering with their way of life. These were turbulent times that the story captures well.
