Caroline is 13 years old when she and her family decide to spend Christmas at the idyllic Wilson's Inn in Canada. But what should have been a perfect Christmas in the beautiful snow-covered mountains quickly turns into a nightmare when she and her family are caught in an avalanche and her younger brother dies.
After the tragic event, Caroline's world falls apart. Her father starts drinking, and her mother falls into a depression. Caroline develops anxiety and closes herself off from those around her.
Five years later, she returns to the inn to confront the place where the tragedy happened. There, she meets Jonathan Wilson, who is three years older than her. With his help, Caroline seeks to uncover the truth about the avalanche. Along the way, she becomes embroiled in the Wilson family's own struggles and is given a task that requires her to rediscover the joy of Christmas…
