Despite very different approaches to basic philosophical choices, Luhmann’s sociological systems theory and Nietzsche’s philosophy have convergent features. Taken together, their radical new approaches leave most philosophies and sociologies of the 19th and 20th centuries looking literally ancient. They may be viewed as pioneers in developing a philosophy for the 21st century, for setting a calm path amidst the disruptions of nihilism.
