Old Spitalfields Market

London’s oldest market is a charming, gabled, red-brick building diagonally across Commercial Street from Christ Church, Spitalfields.

Fournier Street’s textile tradition continues to this day in the form of immigrant labourers – Bengali rather than Huguenot – toiling away on sewing machines.

The houses on this pretty little street date from the 1720s and form one of the most important and best preserved collections of early Georgian domestic architecture in the country. Built for French Huguenot silk-weavers, the houses were fitted with wood panelling, carved staircases and fireplaces, as well as decorative doors.

the corner of Brick Lane and Fournier Street stands an attractive Neoclassical brick building that reflects the immigrant history of the area. Built in 1743 as a chapel for Huguenots, it became a synagogue in the 19th century, and then a Methodist chapel in the early 20th century. It is now a mosque – the London Jamme Masjid – as announced by the slim, metallic minaret that has recently been added.
