She wanted that woman’s fierceness, her strength, and her determination. The statue seemed more alive than Rose felt in her normal sixty-hour workweek. She reached out to touch the granite pedestal, anticipating the feel of the smooth cool stone under her fingertips. Just as she reached out, thunder boomed and lightning cracked, and Rose yelped at the stinging on her neck. Then all went black.
