Lau Frank is a Danish children’s book writer and illustrator known for colourful visual storytelling and for the series Oscar and his friends (2022). He describes his work as an attempt to capture the feeling of being a child and to encourage young readers to explore the imaginative worlds that books can offer.
He is represented internationally by Lemonade Illustration and has collaborated with numerous Danish publishers and clients in the United States.
Lau Frank grew up drawing and said that he had “always known” he wanted to make art his career. In February 2021, while still in high school, he decided to leave formal education and pursue illustration full-time. He later called this decision a moment of commitment to a childhood passion. Within the same year, he shifted his focus to children’s publishing, stating that it was the field where his enthusiasm “really lies.”
His early commissions ranged across styles and formats, and he spoke about shaping each project to match the tone of the story. He said that experimenting with technique helped him keep his work responsive to narrative needs. By his early twenties, he had illustrated more than seventy books, many of which he also wrote, for both independent authors and established publishing houses. He continues to work as a freelance illustrator based in Aarhus.
In 2022, Frank wrote and illustrated Oscar and his friends, a children’s series published by Tellerup. The books follow the adventures of a young boy and his companions, celebrating play, curiosity and friendship. The publisher praised his dedication to craft, with Tellerup’s CEO stating that Frank “consistently delivers top-notch quality time and time again” and describing him as “an illustration master who has dedicated his life wholeheartedly to his craft.”
Frank’s illustrations are shaped by movement, expressive characters and a willingness to adapt his style to suit the needs of each story. He continues to expand his portfolio in Europe and abroad, working on projects that range from stand-alone picture books to continuing series.
