Joe Canning

Joe Canning, from Portumna in County Galway, is pretty much the best hurler ever. He's got the skills and the vision of a generation, and he made a huge impact on the sport during his 14-season senior inter-county career with Galway. He also did amazingly well at the club level with Portumna.

He burst onto the senior club scene at just 15, and by his early 20s had led Portumna to four All-Ireland club titles (2006, 2008, 2009, 2014), five county titles, and three Connacht championships. His scoring prowess, creativity, and ability to step up in the big moments made him a cornerstone of Portumna's golden era.

At the county level, he was always reliable and brilliant. From his first game in 2008 to when he retired in 2021, he played in 62 championship games for Galway — the most of any player in the history of the hurling championship. He scored 27 goals and got 486 points, which is the most of any player in the competition's history. His mastery of the sideline cut — he scored a record 28 in championship play — epitomised his technical excellence.

Canning won his sole All-Ireland senior medal in 2017, a massive victory that ended Galway's 29-year wait. That year, he was also named GAA-GPA Hurler of the Year and earned his fourth of five All-Star awards. He was a massive part of Galway's three Leinster titles and three National League wins, and he always led the way with his performance, scoring some fantastic last-minute goals and winning the match.

He did well at a young age too, winning two All-Ireland minor medals, an All-Ireland U21 title and a Fitzgibbon Cup with Limerick Institute of Technology. Off the pitch, he was a true representative of Galway, always acting with integrity and humility, earning the respect of the entire GAA community.

Canning retired from inter-county hurling in July 2021, but he didn't stop there! He quickly found a new role as a pundit with RTÉ, where he's still going strong. When he's not on the field, he's busy being an ambassador for UNICEF Ireland, an Audi brand ambassador, and an entrepreneur, running a restaurant in Galway and a bar in Athlone. He tied the knot with Megan Hoare in 2022.

His 2024 biography, Joe Canning, offers an intimate portrait of a prodigy who lived up to the hype and then some — a hurler whose legacy is etched in statistics and unforgettable magic moments.
