Viktor wiped the cold sweat off his forehead. Peaceful life as they knew it was about to end. Inevitably, it would start raining misery, destruction, and death throughout his native land.

The doorbell rang.

After taking a minute to collect himself, Viktor walked to the door and opened it wide. At the doorstep was his father-in-law, Igor Lutsenko.

“Glory to Ukraine,” Igor said, carefully shaking the snow off his collar.

“Glory to the heroes.” Viktor shook Igor’s hand. These greetings had become so common in Ukraine these days.

“Brought your drill back,” Igor noted. “Done with it. Fantastic instrument. Worth every hryvnia you paid for it.”

“Glad it was helpful.” Viktor nodded, taking the drill and carefully placing it in the closet. “Would you like to come in for a few minutes? We’ve got some varenyky on the table. Straight from the oven.”
