Phil Drake

Phil Drake is a British author of fiction and non-fiction. He is best known for The Spooky South (2022), a survey of haunted sites in the south of England, and Unsolved Murders of the UK (2024), his first true crime book. His writing spans horror, dark fiction and real-life mysteries.

Drake was born in 1973 in Southampton, England. He began writing stories as a child, often sharing them with those around him. "Even as a small child," he later said, "I was always making up stories and filling them with colourful characters. His interest developed over time into longer works aimed at a wider audience.

He studied forensic psychology at the Open University. The course deepened his understanding of criminal behaviour and shaped his approach to writing true crime. He is influenced by television programmes such as The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected, which he credits with teaching him the value of narrative misdirection and psychological suspense.

His first collection of stories, Tales with a Twist, appeared as a short e-book of flash fiction. The Arrival followed it, a gothic horror story set in Wales, and Dark Window, a longer work that collected seven dark fiction stories in paperback and digital formats. He avoids extreme violence in favour of psychological suspense.

His first non-fiction book, The Spooky South, catalogued haunted places in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. This was followed by To Be a Saint (2024), a sports memoir about his decades as a supporter of Southampton Football Club.

In the same year, he published Unsolved Murders of the UK: Cold Cases from 1951 to the Present (2024). The book examines unsolved crimes across the UK, focusing on victims whose killers have never been identified. It covers a range of cases, including unexplained disappearances and apparent murders without motive.

The narrative presents facts from police investigations, profiles of victims and theories about each case. The work reflects Drake's interest in forensic psychology and aims to document the details of crimes that continue to frustrate law enforcement and affect communities.

Away from writing, Drake paints in watercolour and enjoys football and cricket. He often writes in the New Forest and prefers to work in silence. He cites Stephen King as a favourite author and Christine as one of his most admired books.
