Katie Kitamura

Katie Kitamura is an American novelist, journalist and art critic. She is best known for her novels, including The Longshot (2009), Gone to the Forest (2013), A Separation (2017), Intimacies (2021) and her most recent work, Audition (2025). She has twice been shortlisted for the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award and has been longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction.

She was born in Sacramento, California, in 1979. She grew up in Davis, where her father was a professor. She graduated from Princeton University in 1999 and earned a PhD in American Literature from the London Consortium. She trained as a ballerina in her early life before turning to writing and criticism.

Kitamura’s literary career began with Japanese for Travellers: A Journey (2006), a travel memoir exploring Japan and her cultural identity as a Japanese American. Her debut novel, The Longshot (2009), centres on a mixed martial arts fighter preparing for a major bout. The cover of the US edition features the knuckles of her brother, who has the book’s title tattooed.

Her second novel, Gone to the Forest (2013), is set amidst political upheaval in a colonial country and focuses on the suffering of a landowning family. Kitamura’s 2017 novel A Separation follows a literary translator in London who travels to Greece for her missing, estranged husband. This novel is being adapted into a film starring Katherine Waterston.

Intimacies (2021) tells the story of a woman working as an interpreter at the International Criminal Court and examines themes of language, trauma and complicity. Longlisted for the National Book Award.

In her latest novel, Audition (2025), Kitamura shifts to a US setting, focusing on a middle-aged actress preparing for a play in New York City. The book explores themes of interpretation, identity, and power through the interactions between the actress and a younger playwright.

Katie Kitamura contributes to publications including The Guardian, The New York Times and Wired, and writes essays on mixed martial arts, film and art criticism. She also teaches creative writing at New York University.
