Zoraida Córdova

Zoraida Córdova is an Ecuadorian-American author who writes fantasy, science fiction and romance novels. She is best known for her Brooklyn Brujas series and her Star Wars novels. Her 2016 novel Labyrinth Lost won an International Latino Book Award.

Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Zoraida Córdova moved to New York City with her mother and grandmother at the age of six. “It’s not a tragic story,” she said. 'We were just starting a new life.' As a teenager, she started writing and attended the National Book Foundation's writing camp. She later studied English Literature and Latino Studies at Hunter College and the University of Montana in Missoula.

Córdova published her first book in 2012. Since then, she has written more than two dozen novels and short stories. Her work includes young adult fantasy, middle-grade fiction, science fiction and adult romance, published under various pseudonyms, including Zoey Castile. She has also written for the Star Wars franchise, including The High Republic: Convergence (2022). Her middle-grade novel, Valentina Salazar Is Not a Monster Hunter, was also published in 2022.

Labyrinth Lost, the first book in the Brooklyn Brujas trilogy, was released in 2016. Through the story of a teenage bruja in Brooklyn, the book explores themes of identity, magic and family. The book won an International Latino Book Award, establishing Córdova as a YA fantasy author.

In 2021, she published The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, a magical realist novel about family legacy. “I had this image in my head of a woman who transformed into a tree,” she said. "And I couldn't get that image out of my head."

This novel marked her first work of adult fiction outside the romance genre. It was inspired by generational trauma and the immigrant experience. "Because it is part of my origin story and my narrative, I can't write a book without it."

Córdova also edits anthologies. She edited Reclaim the Stars (2022) and co-edited Vampires Never Get Old (2020). She sits on the board of We Need Diverse Books and works as a tastemaker for Cake Creative and Electric Postcard Entertainment.
