Jim Tilley

Jim Tilley is a Canadian-American poet and physicist. He gained literary acclaim for his poetry collection In Confidence (2011) and achieved recognition with his debut novel Against the Wind (2019).

Jim Tilley was born in Montreal, Quebec. After graduating with First-Class Honors in Physics from McGill University in 1971, he earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1975. He worked at Sun Life Financial, Equitable Life Assurance, and Morgan Stanley.

While at Morgan Stanley, he served as the Chief Information Officer of Institutional Securities and headed Worldwide Fixed Income Research. He won the Society of Actuaries' Annual and the Triennial Prize for his research papers. In 2008, he was honored with the International Insurance Institute’s Founders’ Award for his work in asset liability management.

Tilley's involvement extended to the boards of the Society of Actuaries, The Actuarial Foundation, and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He chaired the International Actuarial Association’s finance and investments section and delivered a keynote address at the 1988 International Congress of Actuaries in Helsinki.

After retiring in 2001, Tilley shifted to poetry, with over 40 poems published in renowned literary journals. His collection, In Confidence, published by Red Hen Press in 2011, earned recognition, including the Sycamore Review’s Wabash Prize for Poetry and the New England Poetry Club’s Firman Houghton Award.

Esteemed poets like Billy Collins and David Wojhan praised Tilley's work, noting his ability to navigate diverse subjects with a steady hand and gaze at the world. In Confidence showcased Tilley's versatility, offering poems ranging from lyric to narrative, including free verse and sonnets.

His debut novel, Against the Wind, released in 2019, delves into complex relationships. The narrative weaves together the lives of six individuals, exploring themes of environmentalism, love, identity, and political choices. The characters, including an environmental lawyer, a high school teacher, a transgender adolescent, a political science professor, an accomplished engineer, and a separatist politician, face intricate challenges and choices.
