Her works include the All's Fair, Never Date, and Cade Brothers series, which explores themes of family, love, and personal growth. Barnard also writes romantic fantasy under the name J. Barnard, and Library Journal praised her Halven Rising series as "...an exciting new fantasy adventure".

Barnard grew up in the Pacific Northwest, still living with her husband and two children. In her writing routine, she finds joy in creating vivid worlds while enjoying simple pleasures like chocolate and reading on the treadmill.

She humorously notes, "My family knows that burning dinner is just part of my creative process.

Her Halven Rising series, which explores the collision of the Fae and Halven worlds, delves into themes of love and ancient loyalties. In this romantic fantasy, Barnard combines adventure, suspense and magical realism to create stories that appeal to readers of all ages. Speaking of her inspiration, Barnard has mentioned that she enjoys mixing real-life struggles with fantastical elements, creating a world where "the stakes are high and love is real".

In her Cade Brothers series, Barnard follows four brothers who must step up to run the family's luxury resort after their father's death. When asked about her inspiration for the series, Barnard said, "I loved the idea of these alpha brothers navigating a world they weren't used to, facing challenges together, and finding love along the way.

She deliberately crafted each brother's character arc to explore themes of family loyalty, vulnerability and the struggle to balance personal ambition with family responsibilities.

Barnard's Never Date series also focuses on close relationships, featuring characters with the wrong partners — or, unexpectedly, the right ones.

Her standalone romance novels Landlord Wars (2023) and Roommate Wars (2023) bring classic tropes like grumpy-sunshine dynamics and billionaire romances to life.
