Katy Derbyshire

Katy Derbyshire is a British-born translator and writer. She is best known for her English translations of contemporary German literature and for her work in supporting women in translation. Her translation of Bricks and Mortar by Clemens Meyer was long-listed for the 2017 Man Booker Prize and received the 2018 Straelener Prize for Translation.

Katy Derbyshire was born in London and later moved to Berlin, where she established her career as a literary translator. Over the years, she has translated works by authors including Clemens Meyer, Christa Wolf, Inka Parei, Helene Hegemann, Simon Urban, Rusalka Reh, Yangzom Brauen, Tilman Rammstedt, Francis Nenik, and Dorothee Elmiger. She once explained her approach by saying, “I want to carry a writer’s voice across, to make it heard clearly in English.”

Her translation of Bricks and Mortar brought international recognition. The novel came out in English in 2016. The following year, the book was longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize, and in 2018, the translation won the Straelener Prize for Translation.

In addition to her translation work, Derbyshire has been active in promoting women’s voices in literature. She played a key role in founding the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, first awarded in 2017. She has also been an outspoken supporter of the Women in Translation movement and Women in Translation Month, both of which aim to improve the visibility of women authors worldwide.

Her professional activities have extended into teaching and mentoring. She has taught literary translation at the BCLT Summer School, the Goethe-Institut in New Delhi and New York, and for the Deutscher Übersetzerfonds. She has also served as a juror for major prizes, including the International Dublin Literary Award, the Internationaler Literaturpreis, the Schlegel-Tieck Translation Prize, and the Sprungbrett Prize.

Alongside translation, Derbyshire has developed a career in screenwriting. She has completed a television pilot and a feature film script and is working on a second pilot. She is also involved in other literary projects, including V&Q Books, which publishes German writing in English, and the Dead Ladies Show, a storytelling series about women’s history held in Berlin and available as a podcast.
