Stanley J. Browne

Stanley J. Browne is a British author, actor and singer-songwriter. He writes autobiographical works and is known for Little Big Man: An Autobiography (2022). His book reflects on childhood trauma, addiction and recovery. Browne has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Globe Theatre.

Stanley Browne was born in Hackney, East London, to a Jamaican mother. He grew up during the 1970s in a household marked by instability. His mother had schizophrenia, which led to Browne and his two sisters spending long periods in the care system. He explained, “We had to care for our baby brother and missed primary school regularly.”

His teenage years were shaped by crime, drug abuse and time in detention centres, young offender institutions and adult prisons. At the age of 23, Stanley reached what he described as “rock bottom” and entered recovery. He has maintained sobriety for 28 years.

Before acting, Browne performed as a singer-songwriter and released an album called Simply Stanley on iTunes and Spotify. He later studied at Mountview Classical Acting Academy, graduating in 2009. He has performed in productions including Othello and Romeo and Juliet at the Globe Theatre, playing Friar Lawrence.

Browne first considered writing a book over twenty years ago. He began writing in 2006, but only returned to the project in 2021, saying, “It just happened organically.” He worked daily with a ghostwriter during lockdown and completed the book in six months.

Little Big Man: An Autobiography (2022) describes his upbringing in Stoke Newington, London, in a Caribbean household. The story explores his mother’s mental illness, time spent in care, separation from his siblings, and later battles with addiction and crime. He stated, “I don’t hold back. I want people to hear the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

The memoir reflects themes of recovery, identity, and the search for belonging. Browne consulted family members to verify events and structured the book around key stages of his life. He hopes the book inspires others, adding, “Our past does not have to determine who we are today.”

Stanley J. Browne has expressed plans to publish a second memoir titled Big Little Man.
